Recuerda Muerte (Cheap Landscape Trio)

Haiku-videos and music by Sebastian Cruz

I musicalized a series of very short videos I shot with a flip camera- from 13 seconds to about a minute and a half. I wrote for flute and guitar with minor textural overdubs. The flute is played by Sam Sadigursky. The videos are almost like photographs: they are mostly only one thing, or image, slightly moving, almost devoid of development or narrative. They are visual, and musical haiku.

La Fotógrafa (Cheap Landscape) at Jazz al Parque

Sept. 11, 2010. Jazz al Parque was an amazing concert, the production, the audience, the incredible energy. Unforgettable. I will upload more videos of this soon, but for now here’s a sponatneous one that someone in the audience uploaded on youtube.

Pensar – with Lucía Pulido and Cumbiamba eNeYé

This is tune has had a nice little life of its own. I wrote for the ensemble Coba, but ended up recording it with Cumbiamba, an on Cumbiamba’s CD “La Palma” it features my teenage years guitar hero Marc Ribot! Here’s a nice live version, and here are the lyrics:

Pensar
music and lyrics Sebastian Cruz

No hay hielo que me haga frio
ni fuego que me consuma
soy suave como la espuma
que abunda al borde de un rio
de las balas yo me rio
y no me encuentran cazadores
no me bañan los colores
ni algún candado me cierra
soy el pensar en tu nombre
la palabra que me entrega

de dia no pienso en na’
de dia no pienso en na’
de noche tampoco
de noche tampoco
Tampoco quiero pensar
tampoco quiero pensar
aunque suene loco
aunque suene loco

con tu imagen es bastante pa llenar mi corazón
luego de eso no me cabe nada

miremos atardecer
miremos atardecer
se incendian las nubes
se incendian las nubes
yo quiero volverte a ver
yo quiero volverte a ver
de lunes a lunes
de lunes a lunes

con tu imagen es bastante pa llenar mi corazón
luego de eso no me cabe nada

Charcos (Cheap Landscape)

This was a remarkable night for me, playing with Ted Poor (drums) and Stomu Takeishi (bass) in Bogotá. I enjoyed that gig a lot! Thanks to El Anónimo, and el mono (its owner) in Bogotá for the most welcoming vibe, and for believing that honest, live music is what it’s all about. September 10, 2009

Tantas flores y no hay jardín (Cheap Landscape Trio)

This tune is a tribute to my friend Diego Obregón who is a beautiful musician from Guapi, Colombia. Besides being one of those musicians for whom music pours out in the most outstanding, organic, natural and totally rhythmic-perfect way, Diego is a first rate traditional Colombian marimba maker, and carrier of the Pacific Coast tradition, perhaps the kind of Colombian music that moves me the most. “Tantas flores y no hay jardín” means “All those flowers and no garden…” for Colombians, flowers mean compliments. Diego often replies with that phrase whenever someone pays him a compliment.

Novelera (Cheap Landscape)

In Colombia, and most likely through Latin America, there’s a very popular genre of music that’s often labeled “Música para planchar”: Music for ironing. It’s romantic, very melodramatic soap opera kind of music. Here’s the Cheap Landscape’s attempt at it!
