Little Love

My son Manuel Arcadio (Manú) is already a year old! While Mónica was pregnant with him, and we had yet to meet him face to face, I wrote this song for him. This recording features the voice of Marta Gomez, Ruben Samama on bass, and assorted instruments (all the ones that aren’t a form of guitar or shaker…those are by me) and Manú’s heart beat while in the womb!

Little Love
music and Lyrics, Sebastian Cruz

Little love of mine
You came to be inside
Your mother’s sky like
Silent thunder
Quiet spark inside
I know it’s dark in there
And warm and loud and
Always night it’s
Life before words
Little light of ours
Your glow is warm and tender

Little life in her
You’re made of dreams
Of sacred symbols and
Vibrations when you
Break your silence
You will baptize
Our new life with your first cry of life

(voice: Joana Santos)

One of my first songs, from 1995, part of the repertoire for “Los del Centro” a rock band in which I played in my teens in Bogotá. Here it is re-arranged for Coba’s 2nd CD, Canción Mandala. Featuring Sam Sadigursky on Alto flute, Greg Heffernan ond cello, and Roland Satterwhite on violin.

El diablo de la botella
Me pide que tome de ella
Tener, temer, beber

La mesa solo la mesa
La vela solo la vela
Madera y fuego arder

This is my arrangement, inspired by Iván Benavides’s version, of a ‘bunde,’ a rhythm from the Pacific coast of Colombia.

I wrote this piece a couple of years ago for Alejandro Florez’ ensemble Tibaguí. It’s a piece for a traditional Colombian guitar trio (guitar, tiple, and bandola) plus a kind of flute jazz ensemble (flute, bass and drums) This is a live recording from 2008 at El Taller Latinoamericano. I just recently realized that this recording existed through my friend Bernardo Palombo from el Taller who said that it was one of his favorite pieces of music! gracias hombre, for the comment and moreover for supporting so many musicians and artists at el Taller for so long.

featuring:

Alejandro Florez-bandola
Sebastian Cruz-tiple
Nilko Andreas Guarín-guitar
Sam Sadigursky-flute
Pedro Giraudo-bass
Franco Pinna-drums

This I wrote for Holly Page Joyner’s Sundance documentary “Pack, Strap, Swallow.” It’s an amazing documentary about women imprisoned for drug smuggling in Ecuador. I used the marimba as the main voice of the piece. The kind of marimba I used is a sonority common to both Colmbia’s and Ecuador’s Pacific coast.
